Bhagavad Gītā, Chapter 4, Class 167

Tadany full

In this clarifying and deeply empowering continuation on the varṇa system, Acharya Tadany presented varṇadharma as the Gītā’s multifaceted framework for social harmony, growth, prosperity and spiritual evolution — not a rigid birth-based hierarchy but a dynamic lens that views society through three overlapping perspectives:

jāti (birth, immutable and equal in dignity, determined at birth and unchanging),

karma (profession/occupation, fluid and changeable based on choice and circumstances),

and guṇa (character/qualities, fully within individual control and the only true basis for spiritual hierarchy).

Acharya Tadany emphasized absolute equality in jāti and karma — no birth or profession is superior; all four varṇas (brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya, vaiśya, śūdra) are equally essential and interdependent for society’s functioning.

At the same time, the Acharya establishes a clear hierarchy in guṇa:

guṇa brāhmaṇa (noble character, wisdom, self-control) is closest to mokṣa,

followed by guṇa kṣatriya (courage, selfless duty),

guṇa vaiśya (ethical enterprise),

and guṇa śūdra (service orientation).

Acharya Tadany stressed the Gītā’s revolutionary message: while jāti is fixed and karma is limited by external factors, guṇa (character) is always our sovereign choice — everyone, regardless of birth or profession, can cultivate noble character and progress toward liberation through self-effort, making character the true measure of human worth and the universal path to self-knowledge.

The class concluded that this system promotes social harmony by honoring all roles equally, directing respect toward character rather than birth or occupation, and offering every individual the freedom to refine their guṇas — a practical wisdom that remains profoundly relevant for personal fulfillment and collective well-being in any era.
