The Restless Disciple

it is all energy, be it restlessness or quietude, agitation or peace, love or hatred, and you are the vehicle thru which it is manifested

The master was in his room reading a book.
The disciple knocked at the door, carefully and gently.
The master then looked up and waved him to go in.

He did it so with urgency and determination, and even without being asked, he said that he was feeling unbearably restless and didn’t know what to do with it, and, on top of that, the feeling was annoying and troubling him substantially.

The master thought about it for some time, which made the young boy even more fidgety, and then said:

Remember, it is all energy, be it restlessness or quietude, agitation or peace, love or hatred, and you are the vehicle thru which it is manifested, so, if you can channelize it towards a creative and constructive activity, wonderful. Otherwise, try to let it flow and just watch it leisurely as a passerby seated on the banks of a powerful river, i.e., astonished by the immense current but not carried away by it.

Immediately after he finished his message, the master looked into the disciples’ eyes, gave him a kind smile and returned to his reading.

Meanwhile, those words and gestures entered into the boy’s essence so intensely and clearly that, when he left the room, the thick and agonizing feeling of restlessness seemed to have dissolved into a serene sensation of acceptance and orientation and, with those molecules in his heart, he left the room, gently and peacefully, feeling like a new person.
