Gurupūrṇimā

Tomorrow, as we celebrate Guru pūrṇimā, it is a beautiful time to reflect on what the “Guru” truly represents in our lives.
 
In our Vedānta tradition, a Guru is not merely an external teacher, the very word itself reveals its purpose:
Gu means the darkness of ignorance, and Ru means the remover.
So, the Guru is the light that dispels avidyā (ignorance), helping us look past the limitations of our own minds to know and assimilate our true, eternal, boundless nature.
 
On this sacred day, I offer my deepest, most humble respects to my own preceptors, Pūjya Swami Dayānanda Sarasvati and Pūjya Swami Paramarthānanda Sarasvati, as well as the entire, unbroken Shankaracharya lineage (sampradāya) that has preserved this ultimate wisdom for generations. It is through their absolute clarity and compassion that we are blessed with this teaching today.
 
To honor this sacred principle tomorrow, I recommend that you either dedicate some time or spend many times during the day to quiet reflect and chant two powerful mantras that align us with this lineage:

The Guru Mantra

Gurur Brahmā Gurur Viṣṇur Gurur Devo Maheśvaraḥ
Guruḥ
Sākṣāt Paraṁ Brahma Tasmai Śrī Gurave Namaḥ


This reminds us that the teacher is the creative force (Brahma) that sparks new understanding, the preserving force (Vishnu) that sustains our growth, and the transformative force (Shiva) that destroys our ego and doubts. Ultimately, the Guru is a direct gateway to the Supreme Reality (Para Brahman).

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra

Oṁ Tryambakaṁ Yajāmahe Sugandhiṁ Puṣṭi-Vardhanam

Urvārukam Iva Bandhanān Mṛtyor Mukṣīya Mā’mṛtāt


This prayer to the three-eyed Lord Shiva asks for liberation from spiritual limitations and the psychological attachments that bind us, just as a ripe cucumber naturally detaches from its vine.

Let us use tomorrow to pause, chant, and connect deeply with our tradition, and may your studies and sadhanas bring you cognitive clarity, peace, deeper wisdom, and liberation.
