We naturally feel comfortable with people who think, communicate, behave, or experience the world as we do. Differences, however, can challenge that comfort, sometimes creating distance, judgment, or even rejection.
Yet difference is not a threat to human connection. On the contrary, our difficulty often begins when we expect others to fit our own idea of what is “normal.”
Therefore, inclusion does not mean that everyone must be the same. It means creating enough space for people to be different without making them feel less.
In other words, when we replace judgment with curiosity, aversion with understanding, and reaction with awareness, relationships can change.
So, perhaps inclusion begins with a simple question:
Can I make room for another person to be different from me?
