The Well and the Ocean

A well is essential when water is scarce. But when water flows abundantly all around you, you realize just how small the well really was.

In the Bhagavad Gītā (2.46), Kṛṣṇa uses a simple image: a village well versus a vast, boundless reservoir. When water is scarce, a well meets a vital need. But when a limitless flood of water is available everywhere, the well is seen for what it is – useful, but limited. The everyday pursuits of our lives work much the same way:

  • Money can buy comfort and security.
  • Relationships bring companionship and warmth.
  • Knowledge helps us solve practical problems.
  • Pleasures offer temporary joy.

Each has its place. Yet, none of these finite things can answer the deeper, quiet question inside every human heart: Who am I, and am I truly complete?

Discovering the Self (Ātmā) is like stepping into that boundless reservoir. The smaller wells of life do not suddenly become useless or bad. Rather, you simply see their limits in the light of something far greater.

Wisdom does not ask you to reject the well. It simply reminds you that the well was never the whole ocean.
