….freedom and immortality are your inherited right, and no true effort on the spiritual path is ever wasted.
Any genuine spiritual seeker faces more questions, obstacles, and doubts than they would wish for. This happens for two main reasons.
The first is the purification process, what the Vedantic tradition calls citta suddhih, the cleansing of the mind and the heart. This practice (sadhana) brings to the surface many hidden traits, habitual patterns of thinking, and mechanical behaviors that do not support spiritual growth. And, what surfaces may surprise you: a sudden irritation, an old fear, a habit you thought you had long outgrown. However, one must remember that, this is not a sign that you are failing; it is a sign that the practice is working.
The second is the weight of the past — hundreds, thousands, or even millions of prior existences, as many traditions hold, each leaving behind its own deep impressions (samskaras and vasanas): predispositions, tendencies, and fixed attitudes that shape how we see and react to the world.
This is important to be aware of because, although the goal is the pursuit of light, elevation, and liberation, sometimes one must instead go down, that is to say, dig deeper, and deeper, and deeper so that all “demons, filthiness, and impurities” are recognized and, eventually, addressed. The light is not always reached by climbing; sometimes it is found by going down into what we have buried.
Meanwhile, it is paramount to remember that, in spiritual pursuits, progress is better than perfection. So, stay strong, stay focused, and keep going. The road may descend before it rises, but freedom and immortality are your inherited right, and no true effort on the spiritual path is ever wasted.
