Vivekacūḍāmaṇi – Summary, by Acharya Tadany
Class 124
Date: June 17, 2026
In this class, Acharya Tadany continued the analysis of suṣupti avasthā (deep sleep state) from śloka 121 and brought the long discussion on anātmā (not-self) to a powerful conclusion.
Deep Sleep State (Suṣupti Avasthā)
In deep sleep:
- The intellect (buddhi) remains in bīja rūpam (seed form).
- All cognitive functions and the six means of knowledge (pramāṇas) are suspended (not destroyed).
- Everything exists in a dormant, potential condition within the causal body (kāraṇa śarīram).
The universal experience of deep sleep is: “I did not know anything” — a state of total ignorance (ajñānam) accompanied by profound peace and relaxation.
The Six Pramāṇas (Means of Knowledge)
Acharya Tadany reviewed the six pramāṇas and highlighted a crucial point: the first five operate only within the world of duality (vyāvahārika) and always require a subject-object relationship. Only Śabda pramāṇa (scriptural testimony) can reveal the true nature of the Self.
Conclusion of the Anātmā Analysis (Verses 122–123)
Śaṅkarācārya concludes that everything experienced is anātmā:
- The three bodies (śarīra trayam)
- The three universes (prapañca trayam) — both manifest (vyakta) and unmanifest (avyakta / māyā)
Critical Corollary: Since everything we experience is anātmā, the Ātmā can never be experienced as an object. Any experience we have — ordinary or extraordinary — is necessarily anātmā. Therefore, one should never search for or claim to have had an “Ātmā experience.”
Key Takeaways
- In deep sleep, all cognitive functions are suspended while remaining in seed form within the causal body.
- The experience of deep sleep is universal and self-evident.
- Everything that can be experienced — including the unmanifest causal state — is anātmā.
- The Ātmā, being the eternal subject, can never become an object of experience.
- This analysis sets the stage for the next section, which will address the nature of the Ātmā itself.
