Class 52, Tattva Bodha

Tattva Bodha – Summary, by Acharya Tadany

Class 52
Date: July 13, 2025

In this class, Acharya Tadany continued the teaching on Jīva-Īśvara Aikyam, deepening the understanding of consciousness and the distinction between the Self and the not-self.

The Nature of Consciousness

Acharya Tadany presented a clear framework for understanding consciousness through three aspects:

  • Original Consciousness (Caitanya) — The fundamental, unchanging awareness that is the substratum of all existence.
  • Reflecting Medium (Upādhi) — The material or subtle substance that serves as a mirror for consciousness.
  • Reflected Consciousness (Pratibimba-caitanya) — The consciousness as it appears when associated with a particular reflecting medium.

This distinction is essential for understanding the relationship between the individual self (Jīva) and the universal consciousness (Īśvara).

Jīva and Īśvara: Microcosm and Macrocosm

  • Jīva — The reflected consciousness in the microcosm (the individual body-mind complex).
  • Īśvara — The reflected consciousness in the macrocosm (the entire universe).

Both are reflections of the same original consciousness (Brahman). The difference lies only in the scale and nature of the reflecting medium, not in the consciousness itself.

The Common Mistake: Identification with the Body

Most people mistakenly identify the Self with the perishable physical body. This misidentification leads to fear, insecurity, and bondage to saṃsāra. The teaching emphasizes that our true nature is not the body-mind complex but the unchanging consciousness that illuminates it.

Jñānam: The True Wealth and Path to Freedom

Self-knowledge (Jñānam) is the ultimate wealth and the only true solution to human suffering. It liberates us from fear, anxiety, and the cycle of saṃsāra. Unlike material wealth, it provides lasting fulfillment and peace. The entire teaching of Vedānta aims at this realization — that our essential nature is Brahman itself: infinite, eternal, and complete.

Conclusion and Blessing

The class concluded with blessings for the students, encouraging them to contemplate these profound truths and gradually assimilate them into daily life.
