The Boundless Ocean of Love

Love is like a boundless ocean – endless, abundant, and ever full. 

All of life’s experiences, relationships, and moments are its tributaries and rivers, constantly flowing into it, keeping it ever majestic, alive, and overflowing.

Yet, as human beings, we tend to mistake love for a small, finite pond. Fearing that our little pool will run dry, we spend our lives struggling to hold onto its dwindling waters, i.e., resorting to manipulation, emotional bargaining, control, and jealous outbursts. To be sure, we still care, share, and love in return; yet we do so from the standpoint of a miser who is trapped in a trade of quid pro quo – “I have given you this much, so you must return the exact amount.”

It is very much like birthday gifts: people meticulously remember what they spent on a present, and when their own day arrives, they cross-check the value of what was received against what was given. If the scales do not balance, they quietly reduce the value of the next gift.

So, as long as we view love as a transaction between small, isolated ponds, our existence remains anxious, needy and impoverished.

Transformation happens the moment we understand that we are not separate from the fullness of love, we are not fragile ponds pleading for rain because we are connected to the boundless Source itself. In fact, we are the holders of the valve through which the sweet nectar of love flows without limit. 

Then, when this truth is recognized, life becomes an ever-expanding, ever-sharing, and deeply fulfilling expression of love.

The Ocean Within

You were never the shallow pond,
begging for drops from passing clouds.
You are the river, the rain, the shore, 
And the infinite ocean beneath the crowds. 

Unclasp your hands, release the scale,
let every river flow wild and free.
For he who ceases to measure love,
discovers he is the boundless sea.
