Tattva Bodha – Summary, by Acharya Tadany
Class 48
Date: June 15, 2025
In this class, Acharya Tadany continued the fourth major topic — Jīva-Īśvara Aikyam — presenting a clear framework of the different levels of consciousness and the nature of the universe as an ordered cosmos.
Three Levels of Consciousness
Acharya Tadany introduced the following terminology:
- Original Consciousness (OC): The eternal, all-pervading, unchanging consciousness (Sat-Cit-Ānanda Svarūpa).
- Reflected Consciousness at Micro Level (Jīvātmā): Individual reflected consciousness appearing through the three bodies (physical, subtle, and causal).
- Reflected Consciousness at Macro Level (Īśvarātmā): Universal reflected consciousness appearing through the three layers of the cosmos (physical universe, subtle universe, and causal universe).
The Universe as Cosmos, Not Chaos
The entire universe operates as a perfectly ordered system governed by natural laws (physical) and moral laws (Law of Karma). There are no accidents — only incidents where we do not know all the variables. This organizing intelligence is the macro-level reflection of Original Consciousness, known as Īśvara.
Individual Limitations vs. Universal Totality
At the individual level (jīva), we experience severe limitations:
- Limited power (alpaśakti)
- Limited knowledge (alpajñāna)
- Limited memory and resources
At the universal level (Īśvara), there is totality:
- All knowledge (sarvajñāna)
- All power (sarvaśakti)
The Root of Human Suffering
All human problems ultimately stem from the deep sense of insecurity caused by identification with the mortal body. Acharya Tadany referred to the FEDERAL problems of old age (using Swami Paramarthananda’s acronym):
- FEar
- DEpression
- REgrets
- Loneliness
These arise as long as we identify with the temporary reflecting medium (the body-mind complex).
The Solution: Discovering Original Consciousness
The only permanent solution to saṃsāra is to discover our true nature as Original Consciousness while the body and mind are still functional. This is the real meaning of the traditional Vedic prayer:
Asato Mā Sad Gamaya
Tamaso Mā Jyotir Gamaya
Mṛtyor Mā Amṛtaṃ Gamaya
From untruth to truth, from darkness to light, from mortality to immortality — not physical immortality, but the realization of our essential immortal nature.
Key Takeaways
- The universe is governed by perfect laws — both physical and moral.
- Jīva and Īśvara appear different due to the reflecting medium, but they are one and the same from the standpoint of Original Consciousness.
- All insecurity and suffering arise from identifying with the mortal body.
- The goal of Vedānta is to realize our true nature as eternal, all-pervading Original Consciousness through study and nididhyāsana (Vedāntic meditation).
Tadany Um refúgio para a alma e um convite à consciência.
