Response to a reader’s question.

Addictions, whether to drugs, alcohol, social media, power, or anything else, do not merely affect the body; they silently reshape the mind, distorting perception and weakening discernment. Little by little, what was once clear, right and wrong, appropriate and inappropriate, gentle and aggressive, becomes blurred, confused, and distant. In such a state, the person no longer responds from clarity, but from a force that now dominates him.
Therefore, when someone consumed by addiction hurts, offends, or behaves in extreme ways, it is necessary to look beyond the words and the behavior, because, many times, it is no longer truly the person speaking, but the addiction itself that has taken control of the individual. In other words, the essence of the person remains, but it has become deeply covered and obscured.
Having said that, it is important to understand that this does not mean justifying harmful behavior or aggression, but rather freeing oneself from the burden of taking everything personally. It is recognizing that, behind the distortion, there is someone who has, in a certain way, lost themselves to something that has overpowered him, and who, perhaps, needs more care, attention, or distance than severe or cruel judgments.

Addiction of anything, including speaking white lies, is against the principle of moral living.
