Spiritual growth is not about having less of life; it is about discovering a fullness that no finite experience can provide.
Spirituality is sometimes misunderstood as a gradual rejection of ordinary life: fewer possessions, fewer relationships, fewer pleasures, and fewer worldly responsibilities.
But external simplicity alone does not guarantee inner freedom. A person can possess very little and still be consumed by desire. Another can have considerable responsibilities and possessions without depending on them for an identity.
The essential question is not simply, “How much do I have?” It is, “What do I expect these things to do for me?”
When possessions become the foundation of self-worth, losing them threatens one’s identity.
When recognition becomes the measure of one’s value, criticism becomes a personal crisis.
When pleasure becomes the only acceptable state, discomfort feels intolerable.
Spiritual growth involves understanding these dependencies. One can continue to work, love, create, enjoy, and contribute while becoming increasingly objective about the limitations of what the world can provide.
Freedom is not necessarily the absence of things in your life. It is the absence of the mistaken belief that things must make you whole.
